Welcome to a slightly abbreviated version of eudaemonic! Our upstairs AC unit is out with downstairs temperatures slowly rising to match, and I’ve been laid out on the sofa since Sunday with a back muscle pull (or something along those lines). Rest always sounds lovely until it’s forced upon you. I am itching to go for a Peloton run or hike or even just a stroll around the neighborhood. But, I’m stuck for now. So today’s recommendations are in that vein — simple, restful activities and food that doesn’t require an oven.
READING
I finished One Perfect Couple this weekend, and I wouldn’t add this to a recommendation list. I found it a little predictable and the ending was not satisfying. Also, it was a little more … Lord of the Flies than I was expecting.
After seeing it on just about every list and newsletter, I started The Wedding People. So far, so cute. The writing style is a little different, and I’m really enjoying it.
Curious — where do you get your reading recommendations? Amazon recs? Bloggers? I have a few I follow, but I can’t find someone whose tastes align juuuuust right (though Grace Atwood’s are usually pretty spot-on!)
EATING
RJ and I had dinner at Rolf & Daughters on Friday evening, and it was, of course, fantastic. The usual hits were as good as always, but the two standouts were seemingly simple (though of course they aren’t), highlighting in season produce. The spaghetti with cherry tomatoes, breadcrumbs and basil was the best I’ve ever had. Hoping to “recreate” this at home soon. The green tomato, fig, squash, and wax bean dish with a fig-yuzu vinaigrette was so fresh and crisp. I couldn’t get over it. Really recommend snagging a table this summer!
On the nostalgic/it’s hot in here front, I’ve had a few PB&J’s this week and wow. Why did I stop eating these? I used the Bonne Maman blackberry preserves and Dave’s Killer bread for a tiny step up from childhood, but I’m sure those stand up too.
Our Mahjong group message was buzzing about the chocolate covered gummy bears from Trader Joe’s this weekend, and I can confirm they’re worth the hype.
SHOPPING
I have Lidey Heuck’s cookbook Cooking in Real Life on my radar right now. I always enjoy her NYT recipes and loved the season she was on The Lost Kitchen.
I decided to return to my paper planner roots for work and ordered this August-July planner from Appointed. I also bought their three-subject notebook so I can keep notes for 1) work 2) eudaemonic 3) personal all in one, organized place. These remain my favorite notebooks after trying quite a few from Amazon!
For my three male readers (or wives/girlfriends/sisters/friends), RJ and I both love the Banana Republic Athletic Traveler Pant for men. Such a great fit and very comfortable, according to Reej.
I finally bought the Necessaire Eucalyptus Body Wash, and it really does smell amazing.
Love these scalloped bathmats in three different sizes/shapes.
Obsessed and might have to order this white maxi — only $52!
The sale price of this black crinkle dress from J.Crew is also tempting.
WATCHING
Olympics, of course!
I was wanting something super relaxing and easy (so ready for Great British Baking Show to be back!), so I started Zoe Bakes on HBO. I like it! Only a few episodes in, but it’s inspiring me to bake a bit this weekend.
Headed to see It Ends With Us on Saturday night with girlfriends and excited for a movie night out.
Back next week — with a healed back and cold house!
Xx, Annie
